Hi, my name is Elizabeth Spohn. I've known Abbey since we were wee little kids! I love keeping up with her blog and I have really enjoyed this project that she's been doing this summer. It's been so fun to see where everyone is from! I am from TN, born and raised. Last Summer I married the love of my life and moved to Alaska!!! It's been quite an adventure and God has truly blessed us!
Here are a few photos from this past fall. These next few shots were taken along the Glenn Hwy. heading toward Glennallen , AK
This Sunset shot was taken a few miles from our house. I did not edit this shot. I just loved how it came out of the camera!
We lived in Anchorage for 9 months while we were building our home and we looked out one morning and there was a moose on top of the snow pile eating the mountain ash berries.
Alaska is famous for the Iditarod Sled Dog Race. This past March was my second year and I have met people from all over the World that came just to watch the race. If you ever get a chance to come to AK in the Winter then you should make a point to come the first week of March so you too can see the last great race.
Heading down bootleggers alley.
An Alaskan Native Grandma dressed in traditional dress for the occasion. Everyone comes out in there best furs.
Karl and I went up to Fairbanks which is 7 hrs North of Anchorage in March for a conference. We also got to see the Arctic Winter Games. Which is an Ice carving contest. Again people come from all over the world to carve on the ice. I have so many photos but I just picked one of my favorites to show you!
For an early anniversary get a way we went to Kennicott Glacier Lodge for a few days! Kennicott is about a 7 hour drive from Anchorage and is located very close to McKarthy. I will warn you. Most everyone fly's in from Glennallen because the last 60 miles are on a gravel road and your driving about 30 MPH!!!
Kennicott is located in Americas's largest National park, Wrangell - St. Elias. It's also a Historic landmark as it was an old mining town, and is located right beside the Kennicott Glacier. Below is a photo of the old mine.
As you look out from the lodge you can throw a rock at the Glacier Moraine it's that close (Moraine is material transported by a glacier and then deposited.)
We hiked a few miles back with a guide and then put on crampons which are spikes you slide your boots into and we were able to walk on the Glacier.
Karl drinking out of the Glacier!! The water was so cool and refreshing!
On the way home we stopped and you could just see fish wheels all along the bank of the river!
We went up to Knik Glacier for my husbands birthday which is only about an hour from where we live in Eagle River. We took a river boat the river then stopped and took some photos. The Knik Glacier is not safe to walk on. Actually most all Glaciers are not safe to walk on. They are to unstable. There sure do make for some great photos thou!
This is another mine that we went to last week which is only an hour from us. I love Hatchers Pass!
On the way down we saw this guy hang gliding!
My family is in town visiting Alaska for the first time so we've had the pleasure of showing them around. This past weekend the Artic Thunderbirds were here in Anchorage at the Airforce base! We all had such a great time watching them!
Last but not least last week as my sister and I were cooking in the kitchen she looked out the window and saw a Black Bear at the back steps to our deck. We ran to take a photo and to check to make sure my Dad and nephew hadn't gone outside yet! Life is never dull here in Alaska!
Well folks that is all for me. I hope that I was able to give you a glimpse of what Alaska looks like. My husband took half of these photos! I think he does a pretty good job:))
We shoot with a Canon 5D, Mark 3 - Lens Canon 70-200 2.8 L and Canon 28-70 2.8 L
(abbey now!)
