i worked on a farm yesterday. for fun.
my friend miriam works at the farm down the street from me and yesterday i pulled on my boots and headed out for a day of planting beets.
we planted a lot of beets.
there were two teenagers that helped plant with us also. their conversations consisted of all things high school drama and the three of us older people laughed very hard at their woeful tales. its good to know that even in a pandemic, the world of franklin high is still very much normal.
i asked the girl if she was enjoying her long break and without skipping a beat she said, “oh gosh no. i want to go back to school so bad. i am so bored. look at us. we are farming for fun.” she also told me all about the perils of being mormon and having the wear a one piece and was “shook” to find out of was THIRTY. like, oh my gosh i did not look thirty AT ALL.
so thats a blessing.
all our conversation made me incredibly thankful to not be a teenager anymore, but it also reminded me that every age group thinks the next age group has it figured out and thats definitely not at all true. we are all just winging it. and right now, we are pretty much all bored a little bit. and you know what? that made me smile. because this quarantine is hard but there’s probably no other time in history i would laugh with a pair of jewish and mormon teenagers over a field of freshly planted beets and get paid for it in radishes and spinach.
its going to get better i think.
